How to maintain your refrigerator

Appliances require basic cleaning and repair. If you want to keep you fridge running longer and avoid repair service calls, you may want to follow those steps on a regular basis. Those are tips on how to keep your refrigerator running well now and for years to come. If may only take you 1 hour every 6 months, but these steps will keep your fridge clean and running. They will prevent your fridge from breaking down and will save you money on potential service calls:
expensive

Wipe Down the Door Gasket

The gaskets on the refrigerator and freezer doors are made to seal the cool air. It's essential to make sure that it seals well. Look over the gaskets to see if there are cracks. Clean the door gasket regularly with hot water and a sponge. It is preferable not to use strong chemicals to clean because it can damage the gasket, simply use an all-purpose cleaner. Check for air leaks which are most of the time caused by sticky food stuck in them.

Check and Clean the Condenser Coils

Condenser coils are located underneath or in the back of your refrigerator. If they are clogged with dust, they won’t release heat and the compressor will be overworking. This results in more usage of power, so more money and overheating can cause a breakdown, therefore shortening the life of your fridge. To access coils underneath, unsnap the grille at the bottom of the refrigerator to access the coils. You can simply clean the coils with a vacuum or a broom.

Keep Food Away from Freezer Vents

It is important that the vents in the freezer are unobstructed. They allow the air to move in the freezer and when they are blocked, clogging can cause a lot of damage. Remove food away from the vent openings and clean the air return so crumbs don't clog them.

Adjust the Temperature to the Middle Settings

Set the temperature controls to the middle settings. The perfect temperature for your fridge is between 38 and 42 degrees F and the freezer, between 0 and 5 degrees.

Clear and Clean the Water Drain

Locate the drip cup. Refrigerators work with a drain hole and drip pan to control condensation and allow water that melted from the freezer to evaporate. You need to clean the drain hole and drip pan. Remove any food particles and mineral deposits from the drain hole and to scrub out the drain pan.

Change the Water filter on Dispenser Regularly

If your refrigerator makes ice or has a water dispenser, there is water filter that needs to be replaced every six months.
